When the Bed Bugs Bite

We received some photos from a client the other day and thought it was a good time to talk about bed bug bites.  Did you know that not everyone even knows that they are being bitten?  Almost 60% of people bitten by bed bugs never have any reaction at all!

image

A bed bug bite takes between 7 and 10 days to appear on the skin.  They may or may not itch and they are usually quite small.  The often occur in a set of three, commonly referred to as “breakfast, lunch and dinner.”  Ew.

image

Like with poison ivy and poison oak, only allergic people will react to bed bug bites, but those reactions can range from small itchy spots to anaphylactic shock (very rare).

The skin of the hands, feet and face are more sensitive to bed bug bites and react more than other areas of the body.  Bed bug bites are also often misdiagnosed by doctors.

The itch of bed bug bites can be made worse by:

A warm bath
Chlorinated water from swimming
Exercise

Bed bug bites start as little red bumps, easily mistaken for mosquito bites.  They are typically longer than mosquito bites.  The swelling from a bed bug bite can be up to 20 centimeters across if you have a strong reaction.  The bite eventually progresses to a blister not unlike what is seen in chicken pox.

Since bed bugs do not feed every day, your rash or series of bites might only occur sporadically.

Unfortunately, there are also psychological symptoms in a bed bug infestation.  Loss of sleep, anxiety and high levels of stress accompany these pests everywhere they go.

Luckily, bed bugs do not carry disease and the bites will go away on their own.  You can treat the itching topically as you would any other bug bite.

The most important thing to do is to eradicate the infestation as soon as it is discovered!

High heat has been proven to be the only eradication method effective in just one treatment.  It kills bed bugs at every stage of development—eggs through adults—and does not
contaminate a structure with powerful chemical insecticides, which require more than one treatment, bagging of food and moving out of the structure for an extended period.

Alliance Environmental Group is proud to offer ThermaPureHeat(r), which raises the temperature of an area, a room or an entire structure to over 150° to kill all insect pests in one treatment.  If you think you have bed bugs, please contact us!  Our services are available throughout California from offices in Azusa, Moorpark, Santa Clara, Aptos, San Diego, Palm Desert, and in January 2012 Anaheim!

Mercury: Stay Away!

Mercury is a fascinating element: liquid metal in ordinary temperatures, luminous and almost magical.

It is not, however, safe.

image

Mercury is the only metal on Earth that is liquid under normal pressures and temperatures.  It is found around the world in deposits of Cinnabar, which is itself also highly toxic.

There are some rules about disposal of mercury that you should know, but first…

The History of Mercury

Mercury has been used for thousands of years, but not for the same reasons we use it today.  It has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs as old as 1500 BCE.  In China and Tibet, mercury was used to heal broken bones, lengthen lifespans and for better health.  One Chinese Emperor was poisoned by a mixture of mercury and powdered jade that was intended to make him live forever!

The ancient Greeks and Romans used mercury in cosmetics, which sometimes caused deformities.  Alchemists thought of mercury as the “first matter” from which all other metals were formed and it was used in processes that attempted to transmute other metals into gold.

Mercury became an important resource in the 16th Century when it was used to refine silver ores in Spain and Spain’s colonies in America.  Over 100,000 tons of mercury were mined in Peru between the mid-16th and mid 19th Centuries.

Decorative pools could be filled with Mercury in Spain during that time and the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris sported a Mercury fountain designed by famous artist Alexander Calder.

Mercury has also been used for:
* Silvering mirrors
* Cleaning gun barrels
* Leveling roads
* Making hats
* Preserving wood

Peter Lewis Allen has written about mercury, “One eighteenth-century recipe called for mixing the liquid metal with hot chocolate, though the author cautioned against this exotic beverage because he felt that the ‘chocolate’ was too dangerous.”

Properties of Mercury

Mercury is not a good conductor of heat, but is a moderate conductor of electricity.  It does not react with most acids and can dissolve easily into many other metals, but not iron so iron has historically been used to store and transport mercury.  You cannot bring mercury on an airplane because it forms an amalgam with aluminum so easily, if there were an accident, it could damage exposed aluminum airplane parts.

Modern Uses of Mercury

Mercury is used in the manufacture of industrial chemicals and some commonly used products.

Mercury can be found in the new compact-fluorescent light bulbs.  It is still used in dental amalgam fillings, as a preservative in vaccines and other over-the-counter products including: antiseptic ointments, laxatives, eye drops, nasal sprays and diaper-rash ointments.

Thermometers and Blood-Pressure meters, and Thermostats which use mercury can still be found, but they are being phased out and you are encouraged to replace your mercury thermostats and thermometers as soon as possible, but be sure to dispose of them properly!

Health Effects of Mercury Poisoning

Mercury poisoning can occur when exposed to mercury vapor or water-soluble forms of the element, or by eating contaminated fish.  The mining and refining of mercury are causes of mercury exposure and poisoning.  Mercury poisoning can cause: vision, speech and hearing impairment; coordination problems; liver failure; and death.  The effects are dependent on the dosage and how long the exposure occurred.

Safe Disposal of Mercury

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulates the disposal of mercury-containing equipment.

If you are renovating a structure and removing mercury thermostats, you need to dispose of them:
* With an HVAC wholesaler; or
* With your local government Household Hazardous Waste collection facility.

If you are found to have disposed of a mercury thermostat improperly, you could be fined as much as $25,000 for one violation and $25,000 per day for continuing violations.  That’s quite a fine!

As part of Alliance Environmental Group’s Demolition services, we adhere strictly to government regulations and dispose of all hazardous materials through a federally-licensed waste disposal company.  Click HERE to read more about our Hazardous Waste Cleanup Services.

Please be sure to dispose of your old thermometers and thermostats properly.  Protect the health of your family, your neighbors and your planet!

When a fire strikes, the residual damage can be as extensive as the actual burn. The presence of asbestos in a structure after a fire creates a public safety issue. Found in many structures built before 1978, asbestos is often discovered during a disaster cleanup. Asbestos can be any of several minerals that separate into long, threadlike fibers. Because certain varieties do not burn and do not conduct heat or electricity, they were used for making fireproof materials, electrical insulation, roofing, filters and much more.

Additionally, when the smoke plumes clear in disaster areas, there are many health and safety concerns to deal with. Homes in a burn area that have not been directly damaged by fire often experience a high level of toxins in their internal air ducts. It is recommended that homeowners who have air quality concerns have their air ducts inspected for allergens and disease-causing contaminants. VIDEO: How Well Do Insecticides Really Work?

In this clip from the National Geographic Channel’s series “Invaders,” researcher Jeffrey White from Bedbugcentral.com tests some common insecticide treatments for bed bugs with interesting results!

The only way to kill bed bugs at all stages of development safely and quickly is by using high heat.  Alliance Environmental Group offers ThermaPureHeat treatment for bed bug infestations, which raises the temperature of an area, room or entire structure to 150 degrees Fahrenheit and kills adult bed bugs, larvae and eggs.  It is safe to re-enter the structure immediately after treatment and there is no need to wash your linens or bag your food.  Heat leaves no residue and is effective in one treatment.  If you have any questions, please contact us at Alliance

We will soon be opening a new office in Anaheim, California so if you need our services in Orange County, we are here for you!  I will post more information as soon as I have it, but the lease is signed and we are very excited about this expansion!

Join Us in Supporting Our Community!

At Alliance Environmental Group, we are committed to supporting the communities in which we work.  One of our favorite organizations is We Care East L.A., which has been holding a community holiday event annually since 2001.

image

We Care East L.A. provides toys for children who might not otherwise receive any holiday gifts, as well as boxes of food to help families prepare nourishing meals during the holiday season.

In 2010, We Care East L.A. served over 2500 community members, but unfortunately had to turn away 400 more.  And since last year the need has only grown. They are expecting twice as many people in need to come to their doors in 2011.

The We Care East L.A. holiday community event for 2011 will be held on Saturday, December 17th from 10am-2pm at 122 South Evergreen Avenue in Los Angeles.  There will be free food, free toys for children and free groceries for families in need, but they can only serve everyone if we work together.

Alliance Environmental Group and our partner AirTek Indoor Air Solutions will be sponsoring the We Care East L.A. again this year in support of their goal to serve every family in need.  If you would like to join us, call Viviana Tello at We Care East L.A. at (323) 702-4372 or send her an email at wecareela@yahoo.com.

I would like to take a moment to be thankful for what I have.  There are so many in our community who are hungry and need support.

Thank you.

Asbestos 101

National Lung Cancer Awareness Month kicked off last week with some interesting news items, especially about Mesothelioma, the lung cancer which is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers.  What do you know about asbestos?

image

History

Asbestos is not one substance, but a set of six minerals which separate into thin fibers and have heat, fire and acid resistant properties.  The use of asbestos goes back at least 4500 years in Finland and was named by the Ancient Greeks.  In the 6th Century, wealthy Persians would astound dinner guests, cleaning their asbestos napkins by throwing them in the fire.  Charlemagne is believed to have owned a tablecloth made of asbestos.  Famous explorer Marco Polo was reported to have been offered fireproof garments made of “wool from the mountains,” but were made from wool-like asbestos fibers.

Asbestos use in the US began in 1858 and became ubiquitous during the Industrial Revolution.  Asbestos has been used for such diverse products as: concrete and fireplace cement, pipe insulation, fireproof drywall, lawn furniture and heat and fire resistant gaskets.  It was once used in the braking systems of automobiles.  One brand of cigarettes even used asbestos in their filters in the 1950’s!

The danger of exposure to asbestos was being observed as early as in ancient Roman times.  Through the Twentieth Century, information and research have increased our knowledge of the dangers of asbestos exposure enormously, leading eventually to passage of the Asbestos Ban and Phase Out Rule in the US in 1989, but which was overturned in 1991.  However, the EPA does have very strict rules about asbestos exposure in the workplace.

Asbestos in the 21st Century

The new millennium began with possibly the worst asbestos-related disaster in history, the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center.  It is believed that over 1000 tons of asbestos were released into the air on that tragic day and has probably been the cause of many of the respiratory diseases in first responders, construction workers and others exposed to the air in the aftermath of the attack.

Although employers are very careful today to follow EPA regulations regarding current exposure to asbestos, wrongful death lawsuits are many and growing from the years when asbestos was commonly encountered in the workplace.

Fiberglass is the most common substance used as a replacement for asbestos in current construction for insulation.  Other organic fibers and silica are also used for many of the products that used to contain asbestos.

What to Do If You Find Asbestos

Asbestos is often found during renovation and reconstruction projects, as well as after natural disasters.  Homeowners are not required to remove asbestos, but since exposure on even one occasion can cause disease, it is a good idea to have it removed once it has been exposed.  If you are planning to sell your house, California law requires you to disclose the presence of asbestos to potential buyers.

Commercial property owners are required to remove asbestos if it has become exposed or dangerous.

If you need to remove asbestos safely, call a qualified, licensed asbestos abatement contractor like Alliance Environmental Group.  We have the necessary knowledge, talent, experience and resources to solve your asbestos abatement challenges efficiently and safely.

If you need asbestos abatement services for flooring, sheet goods, pipe insulation, siding, roofing, duct work, stucco, drywall, ceiling tile, popcorn ceiling, plaster, buttonboard, fireproofing and other products, we are here to help!

News from Our Newsletter!

I’m still pretty new around here and when I received my Fall Newsletter from Alliance Environmental Group this week, it had some news to me that I thought should be up on the blog as well.

image

This summer, Alliance Environmental Group received approval from the California Department of Insurance to offer a 4-credit Asbestos, Mold and Lead Awareness course to insurance adjusters.

Alliance’s corporate headquarters in Azusa, California sports a 7500 square foot training center built to address the necessity for ongoing training for our own service representatives, but CEO Joe McLean told me, “We saw a need to extend our training to insurance professionals, property managers, contractors and other major employers in our area.”

Joe is proud of Alliance’s ongoing commitment to providing professional development to the industry, not just to his own employees.  “The center addresses a universal need for quality technical and specialized training” that requires minimal travel, as many smaller companies have had to deal with budget cutbacks.  There is no shortcut to getting hands-on experience, but getting that experience locally has tremendous value.

When their training is completed, participants have experience in various remediation processes and are up-to-date on the most recent rules and regulations, another huge training need.  Participants will learn about the work necessary to restore a structure to an environmentally safe condition and gain the knowledge necessary for writing accurate estimates for restoration.

Our team of trainers, Joe McLean, Senior Executive Jeff McLean and Client Relations Director Bill Wood, has taught hundreds of professionals and have more than 50 years of combined experience.

The California Department of Insurance requires Insurance Adjusters to complete 24 credits of continuing education every 2 years.  Alliance Environmental Group’s course is a great way to get a lot of information, hands-on experience and some of the professional development every Insurance Adjuster needs to remain licensed in the State of California.

Bed Bugs: Prevention and Treatment

Amber Property Management asked us to provide an article for their blog a couple of weeks ago, isn’t that nice?

image

I would normally take a day off bed bugs, but I wanted to cross-post the article now that it is up on Amber Property Management’s blog.  Here you go:

Bed bugs are all over the news and it’s easy to get freaked out about the possibility of picking up an infestation from a hotel stay or movie theater seat.

Please do not succumb to the temptation to be fearful about bed bugs.  There are lots of things you can do to prevent a bed bug infestation and new treatments for bed bugs are safer, greener and more effective than ever.

Bed Bug Myths

As you can imagine, I keep up with the latest news about bed bugs and I see a lot of misinformation go by.  But with the increase in bed bug encounters comes an increase in bed bug research and a lot of that misinformation has been debunked, as it were.

* Myth: Bed bugs can live years without feeding.
Truth: Bed bugs can live months without feeding, it is true, but not years.
* Myth: Bed bugs carry disease like fleas.
Truth: Bed bugs do not carry disease.
* Myth: Bed bugs are highly contagious
Truth: The contagiousness of bed bugs is vastly overstated.
* Myth: Bed bugs can only be killed by powerful insecticides.
Truth: There are many alternatives to insecticides and the chemicals themselves can be very dangerous.

How to Prevent a Bed Bug Infestation

* Inspect any furniture before bringing it in, even if it is new.  Many furniture stores have been infested.
* Don’t pick up discarded furniture from the street
* Check the bed and bed frame of any hotel room you stay in for signs of bed bugs before you unpack

Bed Bug Treatments

If you discover you have a bed bug infestation, there are lots of DIY bed bug treatments out there, but pest control professionals agree that bed bugs are the most difficult insects to eradicate once they have a foothold in your home.  There have been over 100 illnesses and one reported death from misuse of bed bug insecticides by consumers.  It is best to stay calm and call in a professional.  They will inspect your home and evaluate what is needed to kill all the pests and put your mind at ease.

If you choose insecticide treatment, keep in mind that you will have to vacate the structure for an extended period (up to three days, depending on the treatment) and be sure to wash all of your bed linens in hot water before using them again.

A more recent addition to the bed bug treatment arsenal is heat.  Heat is the only non-chemical way to successfully treat entire structures for bed bugs.  Freezing, electrogun and microwave treatments can only be used on small areas.  An added benefit to heat treatment, you can enter your structure safely immediately after the process is complete.
Alliance Environmental Group uses a process called ThermaPureHeat(r) to treat structures for bed bugs.  This heat treatment offers many advantages over insecticide treatments:

* No toxic chemicals
* No three day move out
* No odor
* No bagging of food before treatment
* No harm to people or pets
* Fewer complaints from neighbors

The most important thing to remember if you encounter a bed bug is that is not going to be with you forever.  There are ways of preventing it from entering your home and safe ways to kill it if it does.

Are Bed Bugs the Ugliest? Vote Now!

No, we’re not taking a poll, but Arizona State University is having a fun contest and you can cast your vote.

image

Arizona State University is currently holding its fourth annual Ugly Bug Contest and the winner at the moment is the Flower Beetle!  The Flower Beetle?!?  No way!

They are expecting over 35,000 votes in the contest this year’s western-themed contest, “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugliest Bug Contest.” The insects must compete in all three categories of the title, since the benefits they bring can mitigate their unappealing aesthetics.

Bed bugs are competing against such strong contenders as the Damsel Bug, the Green Lacewing, the Seed Beetle and the Flea Beetle, among others.  I personally don’t see how any bug named a “Lacewing” can be all that ugly but there are electron microscope pictures of all the contestants on their website, so go see for yourself.

A new feature in this year’s contest is the addition of “Six-Legged Recipes” which include information about cultures which commonly eat bugs and some “fun” snacks like “Bug Bars” and “Chocolate Covered Crispies.”

Voting is open until December 15th, so head on over to ASU’s site and let them know that Bed Bugs are the ugliest critters on the list!

VIDEO: Bed Bug Apocalypse

Watch this video which documents the history of bed bugs in the US and shows how they can be eradicated in just one treatment by using high heat!

Bed bugs were almost wiped out in the United States by the use of DDT.  Since the 1950’s however, they have become resistant to the insecticides we use today and spread more easily because of the ease of international travel.

Today, 20% of the American population will admit to either having had bed bugs or knowing someone who has.  The incidence of bed bug infestation has increased 500% in the past two years.  Heat treatments are the only way to kill all bed bugs, larvae and eggs in one safe, chemical-free treatment.  Alliance Environmental Group offers ThermaPureHeat to treat bed bugs in any structure.

Happy National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week!

The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has designated the last full week of October as National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.  At Alliance Environmental Group, every week is a good week for preventing lead poisoning!

image

Even though lead paint and leaded gasoline have been banned for over thirty years, lead poisoning remains one of the most common pediatric health problems in the US, while being the most preventable.  In some communities, over 50% of the homes and apartment buildings were built before 1978 and present at lead poisoning risk to this day.

Sadly, according to the CDC, the risk is highest for minority and low-income children, who are more likely to live in these older residences.  The distribution of lead-based health risks and effects is significantly out of balance, falling primarily on these populations.

The risks of lead poisoning include:
* Learning disabilities
* Hearing and visual impairment
* Developmental problems

Children with high levels of lead grow up to have more challenges as well.

Lead poisoning education programs are great for what they are, but rely on families to do the repairs and remediation themselves, which may not be financially viable, especially in today’s weak economy.

The Economic Policy Institute reports that “every $1 spent on controlling lead results in a return of $17-$221” in reduced costs and increased earnings for each child who is protected from lead poisoning.  If you live in a house or apartment built before 1978 and have not already tested for lead paint and lead dust, now is a great time to make sure that your home is safe for your family.

If you need help with testing, prevention, clean up after construction or renovation or lead paint removal, please call on Alliance Environmental Group.

Bed Bug Resistance to Insecticides Becoming More Clear

Bed bug infestations have skyrocketed in the US and around the world in the past decade and so has the difficulty of eradicating them.  Researchers at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) have been making great strides in explaining why.

image

Bed bugs have developed resistance to the most common insecticides used to control their populations—pyrethroids.  The pests have developed multiple genetic mechanisms to defeat the neurotoxins which are the active ingredients in these chemicals.

The Virginia Tech Vector-Borne Disease Research Group has found genes in the bed bug transcriptome (genes that are expressed) which produce enzymes used to deactivate and break down insecticides.  The production of these enzymes is much higher in the bugs with these genes than in a control population.  The team also found a mutation in the target gene for pyrethroid insecticides which enhances the resistance of the bed bug nervous system to the chemical’s toxic effects.

The scientists tested a highly resistant population of bed bugs from Virginia against a non-resistant strain from New Jersey that has been raised in the lab since the 1970’s and found that the resistant bugs required 5200 times more of one insecticide and 111 times more of another to kill the insects.

It’s no wonder bed bugs are harder and harder to wipe out and we hear so many stories of thousands of dollars spent by home and business owners attempting to eradicate infestations only to have the bugs come back again and again.

A much safer and effective solution to a bed bug infestation is a heat treatment.  Adult bed bugs, larvae and eggs are all killed at temperatures of 150°F (65°C).  Alliance Environmental Group can treat anything from an entire structure to a specific area with ThermaPureHeat(r).  Heat treatment requires no food bagging, no waiting time to re-enter the structure, no odor or chemicals and causes no harm to people, animals or your relationship with your neighbors.
If you discover a bed bug infestation in your home or office, keep calm and call in a professional.  Alliance Environmental Group is here to help!
