Alliance to the rescue…
In the early morning of July 10th 2009 the Monterey Fire Department responded to a call in a downtown building, and when they arrived at the scene found fire in the basement. The fire was deemed significant because it was in a building attached on either side by two other buildings, the Golden State Theatre and a former bank building.
The building at 411 Alvarado Street is an historic building, constructed in the early 1900s, and was known to have possibly contained asbestos. The presence of asbestos in the structure created a second public safety emergency, and the asbestos contaminated debris needed to be properly contained. Through the awesome efforts of over 60 firefighters from all over the county the fire department was able to extinguish the flames. In this process, the asbestos-contaminated structural debris was removed from the building and displaced to Alvarado Street.
Alliance Environmental Group was contacted and within one hour was on the scene to assist with the decontamination of the area and asbestos-contaminated structural debris piles. The quick response allowed the sidewalk to be opened and business to continue as usual with minimal disruptions. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of Alliance Environmental Group, the citizens of downtown Monterey had only one emergency to deal with that day.
