Air Duct Cleaning in Grow Houses

Written by Alliance Environmental

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a building is wasted. Contaminants in the air ducts can cause it to operate harder and shorten the life of the HVAC system. Although filters are used, the heating and cooling system can still be susceptible to contaminants through normal use.

When air ducts are properly cleaned, the HVAC system can maintain a desired temperature more efficiently. As a result, less energy is expelled, resulting in improved cost-effectiveness for growers. Professional duct cleaning involves the use of specialized blowers, vacuums, and brushes to clean out the supply, intake, and return ducts throughout a building. Duct cleaning should also involve a thorough cleaning of the air handler, registers, grilles, fans, motors, housings, and coils of the HVAC system.

For growers, unclean air ducts affect the quality of the flowers by exposing them to contaminants that can blow onto the flowers; such as vermin from rodents or insects, dust, debris and/or particles, visible mold growth inside hard surface (e.g., sheet metal) ducts, or on other components of your heating and cooling system.

The air quality when ducts are not clean decreases significantly and can cause harm to a building, its occupants and flowers. HVAC systems should be inspected a minimum of once per year. Supply and return ductwork should also be inspected a minimum of once per, one or two years – depending on the building type and use. According to NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association), a little visible dust in the duct system is insufficient justification for duct cleaning.

AirtekAuthority HVAC, and MSE Environmental are industry leaders, focused on helping grow houses conform to the highest professional standards, set forth by the NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaning Association). The NADCA has strict standards relating to equipment, cleaning procedures and ethical behavior.
