Asbestos Found Throughout the United States

Recently asbestos was discovered in Nevada close to several cities. Geologists found several fibers everywhere. What we might not realize is that asbestos can be found in many places in the United States. In fact, in California is where asbestos is most concentrated in. In 2011, an article by the U.S Geological Survey and the California Geological Survey states that “Asbestos has been reported to occur in 45 of California’s 58 counties.” Naturally occurring asbestos in these counties can be found and can be a main concern because public health of a community can be exposed to asbestos and if disturbed that is when it can become dangerous.

The U.S Geological Survey illustrates an asbestos map of the United States. Just in California, there were 25 former asbestos mines, 72 former asbestos prospect and 193 asbestos occurrences.

If we get a closer look of the West, we see many dots all through the state of California. Those dots represent that there were some kind of asbestos mine, naturally occurring asbestos and former asbestos prospect. The image below shows where the last operating asbestos mine was located.

This a great map that shows us to be more cautious of where asbestos can be found and where not to build and to be more careful for geologist to excavate. Overall to understand how to better protect communities and avoid disturbing asbestos. If you think your home or building contains asbestos, it is important to seek professional assistance.
