Location: San Diego County, CA
Project Overview
Alliance Environmental Group was called upon by BELFOR Property Restoration to assist with an emergency HVAC cleaning project at an elementary school in San Diego County following serious indoor air quality concerns that disrupted the school’s opening schedule.
The project involved cleaning and disinfecting HVAC systems and associated ductwork serving classrooms, hallways, and the school library. Significant debris accumulation had been discovered inside the ventilation system, including areas near air registers that distribute air into occupied spaces.
With limited time to address the concerns, Alliance mobilized its Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) specialists, supported by additional personnel from its San Diego environmental services branch, to participate in a coordinated cleaning effort alongside other service providers.
The project required rapid mobilization, experienced technicians, and close coordination with BELFOR to help complete the necessary cleaning work within a critical timeline.
Challenge
The primary challenge was addressing extensive HVAC contamination concerns under an extremely tight schedule at a facility serving young students.
Indoor air quality concerns had prompted environmental testing and an urgent cleaning effort. With the start of the school year postponed, the restoration team faced significant pressure to complete the required work as quickly and thoroughly as possible.
The project required:
-
Mobilizing experienced HVAC cleaning technicians with minimal advance notice.
-
Addressing significant debris accumulation and potential biological growth inside HVAC systems.
-
Cleaning and disinfecting HVAC units, ductwork, and air registers throughout classrooms, hallways, and library areas.
-
Coordinating with BELFOR and other indoor air quality service providers.
-
Completing multiple phases of cleaning within a compressed timeline.
-
Preparing cleaned areas for subsequent environmental testing.
The sensitive nature of the facility, combined with the urgency of the situation, made experienced personnel, effective communication, and attention to detail essential.
Solutions
Alliance deployed its specialized Indoor Air Quality team to perform comprehensive HVAC system cleaning and disinfection throughout the designated areas of the school.
To meet the accelerated timeline, additional personnel from Alliance’s San Diego environmental services branch were brought in to support the effort. The cleaning was organized into three phases, allowing crews to respond quickly as additional areas and work requirements were identified.
Technicians cleaned interior HVAC surfaces, including ductwork, trunk lines, and air distribution components, removing heavy accumulations of debris. HVAC units and associated components were cleaned and disinfected, while removable air registers were power washed and disinfected.
During the project, technicians discovered heavily soiled HVAC filters with suspected biological growth. Alliance immediately notified the onsite BELFOR representative, allowing the filters to be replaced promptly so the condition would not compromise the cleaning effort.
With the school temporarily closed, crews were able to perform the work without disrupting students or staff. Classroom surfaces and surrounding work areas were protected with plastic sheeting and cleaned following each work phase.
Alliance’s operations manager remained onsite to oversee execution, maintain quality standards, and coordinate with BELFOR throughout the project.
Results
Alliance successfully completed its assigned HVAC cleaning work on schedule, supporting the larger restoration effort and helping the project move forward toward subsequent environmental evaluations.
The project included:
-
Emergency mobilization with minimal advance notice.
-
Completion of HVAC cleaning activities across three phases.
-
Cleaning and disinfection of HVAC systems serving classrooms, hallways, and library areas.
-
Removal of significant debris accumulation from interior ductwork and trunk lines.
-
Power washing and disinfection of air registers.
-
Identification and prompt coordination of heavily soiled air filter replacement.
-
Additional labor support from Alliance’s San Diego environmental services branch.
-
Onsite operations management and coordination with BELFOR.
Before-and-after photographs documented a dramatic improvement in the cleanliness of the HVAC duct interiors.
BELFOR expressed strong satisfaction with Alliance’s responsiveness, communication, and commitment to meeting the project’s critical schedule, reinforcing an established working relationship between the two companies.
Beyond completing the cleaning scope, the project demonstrated Alliance Environmental Group’s ability to respond to urgent indoor air quality concerns, identify and address unexpected conditions, and coordinate specialized resources under demanding deadlines.
For schools and other facilities, HVAC cleaning projects of this nature require more than removing visible debris. They demand experienced technicians, careful execution, proactive communication, and the flexibility to respond as conditions evolve.
Alliance Environmental Group brings these capabilities together to support complex indoor air quality projects efficiently, professionally, and on schedule.
