An emergency debris-pickup call to Alliance Environmental Group required both immediate
attention and longer-term action. A diesel truck driver suffered a stroke, and the vehicle
crashed into a two-story, multi-unit housing structure along Imperial Highway in Los Angeles
County.
Although there were no fatalities, the collision displaced asbestos-containing materials that
needed to be contained by licensed professionals to prevent health and further structural
damage. Because of the high velocity of the crash, a portion of the building was in danger of
collapsing.
Another company, which was quickly contracted to shore the structure, needed asbestosawareness training before beginning the project. In addition to several special permits that
were required, one highway lane had to be closed. Because of the high volume of traffic on
this highway, coordination with the city and state was a key factor to success.
After four months of planning and preparation, the project was able to commence. The Alliance
team worked side-by-side with the shoring company to ensure thorough work in a safe
environment. Mini excavators and boom lifts, along with other large equipment, were used to
stabilize the structure and perform the asbestos abatement.
With ten expert field technicians, Alliance completed the job in one day. Its crew removed
and properly prepared all asbestos-contaminated content in the units—including furniture and
clothing—for disposal.
After the interior abatement was complete, the team began the exterior stucco abatement,
carefully clearing and disposing all debris. Surrounding soil was also contaminated by the
collision’s impact to the building and was safely removed. Finally, the structure was taken down
to its wood framing, and all contaminated materials were removed and disposed.
After a third-party lab tested the area to ensure that no contamination remained, reconstruction
began.
Alliance Environmental’s creative approach to the project prevented the complete demolition
of the property and saved the client the expense of rebuilding from the scratch.
