COVID Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfection Using ProKure®

Learn about the product ProKure® and its ability to clean, sanitize, and disinfect, as well as its effectiveness against COVID-19.

COVID-19 has been a traumatic pandemic event for the whole of the planet, causing mass disruptions in almost everybody’s lives, in commercial businesses, industrial settings, and public locations. Reducing the spread of COVID-19 has been a struggle for many places, and the EPA and CDC worked together to ensure that proper protocols were announced to reduce the spread as much as possible, from social distancing and masking to the approval of products designed to deal with viruses and pathogens. One such product approved by the EPA for cleaning surfaces that have possibly been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is ProKure V, a solution that creates Chlorine Dioxide.

What is Prokure V and Chlorine Dioxide?

Chlorine is well known in the world for disinfection and sanitizing, in fact most survival guides will include it as an option for sanitizing water for safe consumption in the wild. However, less known to most people is Chlorine Dioxide, where ProKure V makes it available in a dry packet form for creating the chemical on demand when just mixing with water. Chlorine Dioxide is a chemical that is a cell disruptor, which unlike hard chemicals and poisons, works by breaking down the cell membranes of unwanted pathogens, rather than requiring ingestion or digestion. Due to this property, Chlorine Dioxide kills pathogenic cells from the outside in, meaning that a pathogen targeted is unable to mutate, or build a tolerance to Chlorine Dioxide like it could for antibiotics and antiviral medicines.

This ability to prevent mutation, or the building of tolerances, means that ProKure V can be used on any form of SARS-CoV-2 mutated variants. As the spread of Delta increases throughout the United States, it’s important to ensure any spaces that have been exposed be disinfected thoroughly immediately after exposure, and ProKure V can be used to disinfect any hard surfaces within those spaces effectively.

ProKure V is a convenient pouch, which includes a dry compound within it made up of Sodium Chlorite and other ingredients that when mixed with simple tap water, will create Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2). Once mixed, the ClO2 can be used in any number of ways to help disinfect and sanitize hard surfaces in a building.

The History of Chlorine Dioxide

ClO2 has been in use since its discovery over two centuries ago when Sir Humphrey Davy discovered it when he reacted potassium chlorate with sulfuric acid. Come the early to mid 20th century its use started to greatly expand, especially in its gaseous form, as it is a true gas and will expand to fill a space uniformly, which is great for mildew and odor control. In 1944, and the 1950s, ClO2 started to replace chlorine in many municipalities as their water treatment of choice for municipal tap water. In 1967, the EPA registered an aqueous form of ClO2 for use as a sanitizer and disinfectant.

Effectiveness of ProKure V Against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)

ProKure V, which is a product that creates ClO2 in aqueous form when used, is a hospital-grade disinfectant and heavy-duty odor eliminator. It is registered with the EPA as being effective against SARS-CoV-2 within 30 seconds. See the product label for a full ingredients list, specific claims, and general use.

It’s registration number as ‘Performacide’ is 87508-3, and ProKure V’s EPA registration number is 87508-3-89334. For more information regarding COVID-19 from the EPA click here.

Recommended Protocol for Disinfection with ProKure V

When looking to deploy ProKure V in order to disinfect a space that has been exposed to COVID-19, ProKure Solutions has a recommended protocol page that you can follow.

A quick summary: If you are looking to disinfect a possibly exposed building, before you go to the site it is best to get as much information you can about the location such as its level of traffic of people, the urgency of the disinfect, whether they are an essential service, floor plans, when they need to reopen, etc. All this information will determine the number of technicians you will need to disinfect the building, and how fast and thorough you need to work.

Always ensure every person of the disinfection team has been fully trained in the use of the product, as well as the use of their PPE, and general disinfection protocols, from the point of entry of the building to the exiting afterward. Cleaning begins from the exterior of the front door, and all hard surfaces should be wet cleaned. ClO2 can kill COVID-19 in 30 seconds, however, it’s always recommended that hard surfaces be wet for 10 minutes during the disinfection process, then wiped clean with a microfiber cloth wetted with disinfectant.
As well, any person on the team should be fully decontaminated when leaving an exposed building after the disinfection process, and the building should be assessed by a team leader before giving the okay for its reopening.

How to Use ProKure V Dry Packets

ProKure V dry packets are easy to use and can be cut open and poured into a container containing normal tap water. The size of the packet determines the amount of water you need for it to mix to proper proportions, so check on the label of the packet for proper mixing instructions.

Once ProKure V has been mixed in a container, you should use it immediately, however, if you have some solution left over, then it can be stored. ClO2 needs to be stored in a plastic container that is airtight as well as being completely opaque; sunlight can cause the chemical to break down prematurely. Any stored solution should have its mixing date labeled on the container, and it needs to be used within 15 days.

Using ProKure to Disinfect Your Space

ProKure V is a convenient packaged dry chemical that produces ClO2 in an aqueous form, that can then be applied to any hard surfaces to kill pathogens, such as SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), and any of its variants, such as the most recent Delta variant. With over a half-century of EPA approval in an aqueous form, it has been found to be safe to use alternative to harsh chemicals and poisons at disinfecting and sterilizing hard surfaces.
