Mold and Your Health

It may be a gorgeous day here in SoCal (it is!) but we are still in the middle of our rainy season. Climate change has made it rain more than just in February, but February is still a good time to think about why dealing with the mold that comes from dampness is important to your and your family’s health.

Why does mold grow?

Mold spores are ever-present and unavoidable. They can be viable basically forever and are only looking for a source of water to grow and spread. The trick is to keep things dry or dry them out as soon as they become wet so that mold cannot grow.

What health problems can be caused by mold?

We hear more about “toxic mold” and “black mold” causing terrible health problems and even death, but ordinary mold in ordinary amounts can also cause:

  • Lung infections that can lead to pneumonia
  • Allergic reactions
  • Irritated eyes, ears, nose or throat
  • Chronic cough
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rashes
  • Tiredness
There is even some evidence that cancer can be caused by mold.

“Toxic Mold” produces mycotoxins, which can cause neurological problems and even death, but typical household mold is not this type.

Since mold is everywhere, we can only try to keep it in check. Inspect your home often for leaks and water damage. Use a dehumidifier to keep the moisture levels low. Keep your air circulating and ventilation systems clean and efficient. And, most important, clean up any water or dampness from leaks or weather as quickly as possible. It only takes 24 hours for mold to begin to grow. Don’t let it get a foothold in your home!
